Anthropic said it will commit 5% of its shares to a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, subject to stockholder approval. The stake can grow by 2% at the board's discretion for each 50% rise in the company's value above a set baseline. The fund is structured as a wholly owned LLC rather than a charity, and its equity will not be used for lobbying or political giving. One early focus is the impact of AI on the labour market.
What it means: The move shows how large AI developers are trying to answer the question of who benefits from the value they create. Rather than making a one-off donation, Anthropic ties the size of the fund to its own growth, so a higher valuation means a larger slice of the company is directed to public causes. Combined with existing pledges by founders and staff, Anthropic estimates that roughly a fifth of its shares will be dedicated to the public good. Choosing a company structure instead of a foundation gives flexibility, but it also means governance and transparency will decide how credible the scheme is. Anthropic promises more detail on structure and valuation milestones in the coming months, so a fair assessment will only be possible once the operating rules are public. For Europe and Greece, the most interesting element is the focus on jobs. If funds like this start paying for retraining programmes or research on automation, public bodies, universities and civil society groups could find new partners. The announcement also confirms that the employment effects of AI are no longer a theoretical topic, even for the companies building the technology.
