Mastercard unveiled Stablecoin Security at Money20/20 USA, a tool that lets banks and payment providers screen stablecoin payments for fraud, scams and sanctions exposure before settlement. It combines payment data with blockchain analytics and returns a risk score through an API. The first partners are Borderless.xyz and Keyrails. The rollout starts in North America, with global availability in 2027.

What it means: Stablecoin payments have a feature that worries banks: once money moves on the blockchain, recovering it after fraud is extremely hard. That is why checks need to happen before the transfer, not after. Mastercard is bringing decades of card fraud detection experience to a new channel. The problem is real: according to a BIS study the company cites, nearly 60% of stablecoin transfers in 2025 were complex, multi-step transactions, which makes tracing the origin of funds harder. The move fits Mastercard's wider plan to build stablecoins into its core services after acquiring BVNK. For European banks and providers licensed under MiCA, anti-money laundering and sanctions duties already apply in full, together with the travel rule for crypto transfers. Tools that plug into existing compliance processes lower the cost of entry. Greek payment providers considering stablecoin services will need such tools before they launch. The approach also shows how card networks plan to stay relevant as more value moves on public blockchains.
