Revolut introduced Revolut Register, a point-of-sale system available only to Revolut Business users. It pairs a POS screen with a detachable tablet and supports Revolut Pay with Smile, an in-house facial recognition payment method. According to Revolut, merchants pay no processing fees on Pay with Smile transactions. The software mainly targets restaurants, with a product catalogue and a real-time table floor plan.

What it means: Revolut is moving from cards and apps into the physical point of sale, where it competes with Square, SumUp and banks that supply terminals. The strategy is clear: with no fee on facial recognition payments, merchants have an incentive to steer customers towards Revolut's network, and Revolut captures more of the customer relationship. The benefit, however, depends on how many of a shop's customers already have a Revolut account. Biometric payments also raise data protection issues. In the EU, biometric data is a special category under GDPR and requires explicit consent and strong safeguards. For Greek hospitality businesses, where order-taking systems must be linked to the tax authority and card terminals to cash registers, a new system has to meet these obligations before it becomes a practical choice. Table floor plans and sending orders to the kitchen are features businesses want, though, so competition in restaurant software will intensify. Smaller local providers will need to respond with better service and integration.
