Standard Chartered signed definitive agreements on 21 October to acquire 100% of Zodia Custody, subject to regulatory approvals. The regulated custody business will join the bank's Securities Services unit. Zodia's software and professional services arm will be spun off as Zodia Solutions under SC Ventures. The price and completion date were not disclosed.
What it means: Zodia began as a Standard Chartered venture inside its innovation lab, with other shareholders joining along the way. Folding it fully into the bank's core securities custody business shows that safekeeping crypto assets is no longer seen as an experiment but as a regular banking service for institutional clients. For fund managers and companies that want exposure to digital assets, custody by a large supervised bank reduces one of the main risks, the insolvency or mismanagement of the custodian, as seen in earlier crises in the sector. In Europe, the MiCA regulation and stricter Basel capital rules for crypto make such structures more attractive to banks, which already have compliance infrastructure in place. For the Greek market, where banks are looking cautiously at digital asset services, the example suggests a path: start with institutional custody and tokenisation rather than retail trading. Spinning off the software arm also shows the bank wants to keep only the supervised activity on its balance sheet. The approvals will show how quickly such an integration can happen.
