Zcash developers have agreed on block 3,543,405 as the activation point for the NU7 upgrade, expected around 5 November. The upgrade cuts the target block time from 75 to 25 seconds and introduces a mechanism that temporarily removes 60% of transaction fees from circulation, with reissuance from 2031. Funds left in the old Sprout pool will become unspendable after the upgrade. The proposal has two approvals but still needs to be merged into the final specification.
What it means: For users, the most visible change is speed: with a block every 25 seconds, three confirmations will take about a minute and a half instead of almost four, making Zcash more practical for payments. The more important detail, though, is the end of Sprout: anyone who still holds funds in that very old system must move them before activation or lose them for good. Changes like this are a reminder that blockchain rules can change by community decision and that the responsibility for keeping up falls on the user. For exchanges and custodians, the upgrade requires node software updates at a set time so they do not end up on an incompatible chain. In Europe, privacy coins such as Zcash are under pressure, since the new anti-money laundering regulation bars supervised providers from 2027 from handling anonymous accounts and anonymity-enhancing crypto. For Greek holders, the practical question is whether their provider will keep supporting the coin. Activation by block height means the exact date may shift slightly.
