Apex Fintech Solutions, which provides trading and custody infrastructure to investment platforms, is partnering with EDX Markets to expand its digital asset services. Apex will use EDX’s trading and central clearing technology, while keeping trading and custody separate. EDX is backed by major US financial firms. No launch date was announced.

What it means: The partnership shows US crypto markets increasingly organising themselves on the model of traditional exchanges: separate entities for trading, clearing and custody. That separation reduces conflicts of interest and the risk of client funds being lost when a platform runs into trouble, as happened in the past with exchanges that did everything in-house. Apex serves many investing apps, so the deal could bring crypto access to more customers through familiar platforms. In Europe the MiCA regulation moves in the same direction, requiring providers to segregate client assets and manage conflicts of interest, though it does not yet mandate central clearing. For Greek investment firms and banks considering offering crypto assets, the question is whether to build their own infrastructure or partner with specialist MiCA-licensed providers. For individuals, an independent custodian and segregated accounts are among the first things worth checking before opening an account on any platform. A clear record of who holds the assets, and under which licence, matters more than the range of coins on offer.
