BNY announced on 27 October that its digital asset custody service now supports XRP and Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin. The bank is already the primary custodian of RLUSD reserves and plans to let clients mint and redeem RLUSD through BNY, subject to approvals. The two companies will also explore tokenised trade finance on the XRP Ledger, with a supply chain finance initiative alongside C2FO. RLUSD's market capitalisation is about $2.5 billion.

What it means: BNY is the world's largest custodian, and its involvement gives Ripple something it struggles to get on its own: access to the institutional clients of a systemic bank. The most substantive point is not simple custody of XRP but the ability to mint and redeem the stablecoin directly through the bank. If it happens, a corporate client could convert dollars to RLUSD and back through the same banking partner it already uses, without opening an exchange account. Trade finance is also an interesting area, because it still relies on paperwork and slow checking processes. Turning invoices and receivables into tokens promises faster financing for suppliers, though legal aspects, such as recognition of the transfer of receivables, differ from country to country. For Greek exporters and their suppliers, supply chain finance is a practical liquidity tool. If such solutions mature and reach Europe through banks, they could shorten payment waiting times. In the EU, though, RLUSD would need MiCA authorisation to be offered widely, something anyone looking at such services should bear in mind.
