Decentralised exchange Curve Finance has launched StableSwap on Stellar mainnet, its first native deployment outside the EVM ecosystem, meaning networks compatible with Ethereum. The protocol was rewritten for Stellar's Soroban smart contract platform. It supports permissionless pool creation, swaps and liquidity provision, with a beta user interface. Its FXSwap feature for currency trades is planned for Stellar once its security audit is complete.
What it means: Curve specialises in swaps between assets of similar value, such as different dollar stablecoins, with very little price slippage. Stellar, for its part, has built its identity around payments and remittances, and hosts stablecoins such as USDC and EURC as well as digital products from institutional asset managers. Bringing the two together makes sense: payments across currencies and stablecoins need deep liquidity to be cheap, and FXSwap, when it arrives, will address exactly currency swaps, for example between dollars and euros. Rewriting the code for another environment carries technical cost and risk, because new code means potential new bugs, which is why the interface is labelled beta and FXSwap awaits an audit. For payment businesses using Stellar, reliable liquidity could reduce conversion costs. For European users, decentralised services are not fully covered by MiCA, so there is no protection of the kind a licensed provider offers. The move also shows large DeFi protocols seeking growth beyond Ethereum.
