On 2–3 November 2026 Brazilian exchange Mercado Bitcoin reported a hot-wallet security incident with losses estimated around $38 million across multiple networks. It pledged customers would not lose assets, temporarily suspended services and said about $11 million had been frozen with help from Tether, Circle and Chainalysis. No customer data leak was reported; cold wallets were unaffected according to the firm.

What it means: Covering losses from own funds supports customer trust but shows the cost of weak hot/cold separation and signing limits. Greek platforms and merchants running self-hosted or custodial wallets should revisit withdrawal limits, multi-party approval and playbooks with stablecoin issuers for freezes. Tether/Circle freezes are not available for every asset. This is not a recommendation to use any particular exchange. For Greek businesses and public bodies this means a practical review of contracts, timelines and compliance duties, and it is not investment or legal advice. IT, finance and compliance teams should document owners, review cycles and fallback processes before wider adoption or a vendor change.
