Ingenico, one of the largest makers of POS payment terminals, has chosen Cognizant as its global strategic technology partner under a five-year agreement. Cognizant will embed AI across Ingenico's infrastructure, operations, security and data, and modernise its IT systems. It will also provide managed services such as end-user support, service desk, application support and engineering. The value of the contract was not disclosed.
What it means: Ingenico operates in a market that is changing fast. Traditional POS terminals face pressure from solutions that turn phones and tablets into payment points, from platforms such as Square and Stripe, and from banks that want software independent of the hardware maker. In that environment, the company is outsourcing a large part of its internal IT operations to cut costs and invest in its products. Embedding AI into operations and security means, in practice, automatic detection of problems across millions of devices, faster incident response and automated support. For a terminal maker, security is critical, because the devices handle card data and must meet strict standards. Outsourcing such core functions also brings third-party dependence risk, an issue the EU's DORA rules examine closely for financial entities and their critical providers. For Greece, where POS terminals must now be linked to cash registers, device stability and security are directly a matter of tax compliance for thousands of businesses.
