Shopify announced in its Fall '26 Edition that Shop Pay now supports purchases by AI agents using payment tokens from the Mastercard and Visa networks, with American Express to follow. The agent completes the payment without ever seeing the buyer's card details. For Shopify merchants, Shop Pay checkout is available to agents through Shop MCP. The final purchase goes through after the buyer confirms it.
What it means: The biggest concern with purchases through AI agents is security: nobody wants to hand their card number to a program that can be misled or hacked. Network tokens solve part of the problem, because the agent handles a stand-in for the card number that works only under set conditions and can be cancelled without replacing the card. Requiring confirmation from the buyer adds another layer of control. For the many Greek online shops running on Shopify, this means their products can become available to AI assistants without separate development work, as long as Shop Pay is enabled. That does, however, require well-structured product data: clear titles, correct attributes, up-to-date stock and clear shipping and returns terms, because the agent will decide based on them. It remains open how European strong customer authentication will apply to such transactions and how disputes will be handled. Shops should also track what share of their sales comes from agents.
