Tencent and Visa signed a memorandum of understanding on 29 October covering cross-border payments, remittances and AI-assisted shopping. They plan to connect TenPay Global with Visa Pay so travellers can pay participating merchants across the Weixin Pay and Visa networks, subject to regulatory approval. Visa Direct is meant to let more senders abroad transfer money into Weixin Pay accounts. No dates or financial terms were disclosed.

What it means: Weixin Pay, known outside China as WeChat Pay, is one of the two dominant digital wallets in China, with hundreds of millions of users. Linking it to Visa's network helps in two directions: Chinese travellers who want to pay abroad with their familiar wallet, and foreign visitors to China who struggle to pay there without a local account. For the Greek tourism market, where visitors from China are a market with potential, this has practical relevance: if the link goes ahead, hotels, shops and restaurants that already accept Visa may be able to serve Weixin Pay users more easily without a separate terminal. However, the memorandum is a statement of intent, not a finished product, has no timetable and depends on approvals in China and elsewhere. Businesses that target Chinese customers should ask their payment provider what options exist today. The mention of AI agent shopping shows Asian ecosystems moving in the same direction as Western ones.
