Nvidia is in talks to guarantee billions of dollars in debt financing for the data centre Nscale plans in West Virginia for Anthropic, according to The Information and Bloomberg as reported by TechCrunch. Under a residual value guarantee, Nvidia would take over the facility if Nscale defaulted on construction payments and help find a new buyer and tenant. Anthropic has signed a $44.6 billion contract for the first 460 MW building alone. Nscale, which is preparing to go public, had about 25,000 chips running in August out of the nearly 500,000 it plans.

What it means: The possible guarantee shows how closely chip suppliers, infrastructure providers and model companies are now tied together. Nvidia does not just sell processors. It finances and backs its customers so they keep buying, and extending that support from leases and chips to construction itself is a new step. The practice speeds up the build-out but concentrates risk: if demand for computing power slows, losses will spread along the whole chain. Nscale's troubles, from delays in installing chips to Microsoft pulling out of a site in England over a lack of grid power, show that electricity and construction are now the real limits. For Greece, which is attracting data centre investment, the example is useful: power availability, permits and financing decide whether a project happens, not announcements alone. For businesses buying cloud and AI services, the provider's financial strength and the availability of alternative regions are worth checking before long-term commitments.
