Apple confirmed that a first batch of Apple Intelligence features will reach users in mainland China with iOS 27.3 in December, with developer testing from 4 November. Selected features will draw on Alibaba’s Qwen model inside Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence, with sign-in via a Qwen account or Sign in with Apple. The redesigned next-generation Siri shown at WWDC is not part of this first wave. Supported devices start at iPhone 15 Pro and newer, with device or account language set to English or Simplified Chinese.
What it means: For years Apple Intelligence was missing from the Chinese market because of regulatory approvals and local rules on models and data. Partnering with Alibaba gives Apple an approved local knowledge and generative provider without dropping its own on-device models for core features. For consumers and firms with a presence in China, call and message translation, mail summaries and natural-language photo search become available on compatible iPhones without circumventing region policy. Leaving next-generation Siri out of the first wave shows Apple is moving in stages: lower-risk features first, deeper voice-assistant integration later. For Greek software exporters and app makers, the change affects App Store review and localisation: apps that lean on Writing Tools or Visual Intelligence should test behaviour with Qwen and clarify what data leaves the device toward local model providers. Competitively, Google and local players already offer generative tools; Apple’s arrival raises expectations on quality and privacy. Companies with staff in China need updated policies on what is allowed on corporate devices and how flows to third-party model providers are logged. The November developer beta is the moment to catch regressions before the December public release, especially for bilingual English–Simplified Chinese workflows used by expatriate teams and cross-border support desks.
