OpenAI is combining ChatGPT’s Chat and Work experiences so ideas and agent tasks continue in one place, while ChatGPT and Codex will draw on one shared allowance for eligible work from December. Ordinary chats are not supposed to count against that allowance, and Plus, Pro and Business users will see remaining quota and reset times in Settings. Codex stays its own section in the desktop app. The change rolls out gradually to user groups.
What it means: Unifying chat and work reduces friction between discussion and execution, but a shared allowance means heavy Codex use can starve other work tools in the same period. Greek engineering teams on Pro or Business need usage monitoring and role allocation so a few power users do not exhaust the common pool. Clear remaining-quota indicators help planning if the metering is predictable. Companies should update internal policies on what counts as eligible work versus ordinary chat. Relative to yesterday’s coverage of higher Pro limits, today’s angle is product architecture: one purse for work chat and coding. Enterprise buyers will ask for transparent metrics and per-team caps before renewing seats. Gradual rollout leaves room to test workflows before December, including how desktop Codex sessions report against the same counter as web Work tasks for mixed product and engineering squads across time zones. This matters for planning, procurement and day-to-day governance in organisations that already use generative tools.
