At a 3 November 2026 ECON–LIBE exchange, an AMLA representative presented preliminary findings that identified illicit exposure in flows linked to EU-operating providers rose from below 0.25% (2024–early 2026) to above 0.60% in mid-2026. Stablecoins accounted for about three-quarters of identified exposure in 2025. AMLA is preparing coordinated national thematic reviews of crypto transfer accompanying-information (travel-rule) compliance.
What it means: For Greek CASPs, exchanges and crypto-enabled payments firms, the signal is supervisory convergence on the travel rule—not a new EU-wide levy. Figures such as 0.60% are preliminary analytics, not court statistics; do not treat them as a market-size absolute. Practically, tighten KYC, beneficial-ownership checks and transaction monitoring ahead of thematic reviews. Stablecoin corridors need risk scenarios for speed and cross-border hops via bridges/DEX. Legal teams should separate current MiCA duties from the wider AML package applying mainly from July 2027. Businesses accepting crypto from EU customers must confirm their provider collects and transmits required originator/beneficiary data. Spotlighting stablecoins does not make them illicit; it flags their role in identified flows. Prepare policy packs, transaction samples and FIU cooperation evidence. In practice, teams should name an owner, update the risk register and agree success criteria within 30 days. Where suppliers or customers are affected, send a short notice that points to the primary source and avoids overstated claims. Compliance, cybersecurity and payments operations are linked; a change in one area often requires a pass over contracts, access rights and continuity plans. Finally, keep a review date so the item becomes concrete actions for the Greek business rather than newsletter noise alone.
