On 4 November 2026 FinTech Futures reported that under the Alliance for the Future from the 30 October Canada–EU summit in Montréal, both sides will begin talks in coming months on linking instant payments. The EU side uses Eurosystem TIPS; Canada is building Payments Canada’s Real-Time Rail. A working group will also explore opening markets to each other’s banks, insurers and fintechs, with no public interconnection timetable yet.
What it means: For Greek exporters and fintechs with Canadian customers or suppliers, a future instant-payment bridge could cut delays and intermediary cost versus classic cross-border remittances—if it ships. Today it is a political commitment and start of talks, not a live link. Treasuries should not rewire collections yet; watch identity, settlement-window and fee specs when technical proposals appear. Greek PSPs built on SCT Inst/TIPS can sketch product roadmaps for Canadian corridors. The parallel digital-trade and data-cable agenda points to deeper EU–Canada digital ties that also touch data compliance. Legal teams should track how AML and travel-rule duties would split on cross-border instant messages. Until standards lock, keep existing FX and escrow routes for large commercial amounts. In practice, teams should name an owner, update the risk register and agree success criteria within 30 days. Where suppliers or customers are affected, send a short notice that points to the primary source and avoids overstated claims. Compliance, cybersecurity and payments operations are linked; a change in one area often requires a pass over contracts, access rights and continuity plans. Finally, keep a review date so the item becomes concrete actions for the Greek business rather than newsletter noise alone.
